The traffic
We knew before we came that traffic in Jakarta is heavy, but it is horrific. So red lights apply only on cars, the motorcycles don’t seem to care, putting themselves and sometimes others (motorcyclists) in danger. Even though the traffic is govern by anarky, the people are not angry at each others moves. If someone cuts you in your lane, well thats okey. In an European city it would cause road rage using horns to punish each other. Here they only use horns to warn each other, ”hey I am behind you”.
Cross roads are so congested, that ordinary citizens has made it to there own jobs as inoffical traffic cops. They reroute the traffic so it flows, and the drivers tip these guys 1000 rupia (0,06 USD or 0,5 SEK) when they get helped out from a crossroad.
As a parent to a small child we were amazed that not only nobody used baby seats in their cars, but babys could be riding motorcycles.
