The Food

The Food

When you research Indonesia, most of the time the delicious food comes up. The internet is filled with blogs about what food you have to try and were to eat. But so far I am disappointed. Most chefs here are competing on how spicy their food is, to an extent were it stops tasting anything but burn. Olyas coworkers, who themselves are locals, keep buying lunch that is so spicy, that it makes them cry. The crying at lunch has become a normal phenomenon in their office.

We even tried a Sumatran restaurant, were they put a bunch of dishes in front of you, and you only pay for the foods you touch. Now being an former restauranteur, I understood that this place, despite being popular, will not be sanitary. Untouched foods just circulated from table to table. One of us got food poisoning.

The best restaurant we have been to so far, was a Korean restaurant, which we found by chance. They grilled the meat in front of you, and you had to wrap the meat together with different kind of sauces and purées in a lettuce. Now this was a taste journey with a lot of umami flavors which made me happy. The restaurant it self was very entertaining, every time a customer came in, the head waiter yelled, welcome (in Korean) and all the other waiters yelled welcome after that. They were also very friendly to Mark.
